Hope's Art Journey
A Stormy Day at the Beach

One of the reasons we moved back to Clermont was because of the devastation of hurricane Matthew a year ago. Yikes! Here we are in central Florida and Irma's eye came right through here. We are fine and the property survived. There was a huge mess in our yard and we will probably lose a couple of oak trees but no flooding. I feel badly for the people of St. Augustine and Flagler Beach who have gone through the flooding again.
Anyway, I finished this painting before the storm. I had a painting that did not work at 24 x 36 and thought I could salvage the top of it. So, I cut the canvas down and restretched the top to 14 x 24. Since I had some lovely colors left from my large marsh painting, I thought I could add some beach and lighten the sky. That I did and basically painted the whole thing over. It is always fun to try. I had some problems with the paint and palette when I started. There must have been some oil in the sink I soaked my paper in which created a resist to the acrylic paint. Lesson learned - always scrub the utility sink before soaking the paper. Especially since it is a shared sink and you don't know what was there before.
Bottom line is that it was worth the try and I like the painting. I was leaning toward a minimal, moody feeling and decided not to put in figures or birds. We'll see how I feel about that down the line.
